School dance chaperone sign-up
Nobody wants to chaperone a three-hour dance alone, and nobody should have to. Short shifts fill. “The whole night” does not.
Why the group text fails
The signup that says “chaperones needed” with one line gets two names. The gym still needs an adult at the door when the first students arrive and another when the lights come up.
What the sheet should do
- Shifts are slots with start and end times.
- Door, floor, and ticket table are different jobs, so people can choose the one they can stand.
- A reminder the day before catches the parent who booked it a month ago.
Tips from running this kind of sheet
- Publish the student rules in the description so chaperones aren’t inventing policy at the door.
- Pair newer volunteers with a staff member by saying so on the slot.
- Keep capacity tight. Extra adults without a job end up chatting in a clump.
- Add cleanup as its own shift. It is the one that otherwise starts as everyone is walking to the car.

Questions
Should parents put a phone number in the note?
Only if your staff lead needs it for that night, and only an adult number. Don’t ask students for contact details.
Can one person take two shifts?
Yes, if one-slot-per-email is off. They sign up twice with the same email.
