A SignUp.com alternative for organisers who just want no ads

SignUp.com (formerly VolunteerSpot) is a capable, long-running tool with a generous free plan. If what bothers you is the ads your volunteers see, or paying $99.99 a year to remove them, SlotSheet is a smaller, cheaper option.

Free for 3 open sheets. No ads, and no account needed for the people signing up.

SignUp.com’s Basic plan is free with unlimited sign-ups, participants, and email reminders. Free sign-ups show ads, including picture and video ads on the sign-up page, ads in participant emails, and sponsored-offer checkboxes on the sign-up screen. Removing them is a separate ad-free upgrade at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, according to SignUp.com’s help pages.

SlotSheet has no ads on any plan, including free. It also does less: no payments, no text reminders, no custom questions beyond one note field. The trade-off suits organisers who run snack schedules, volunteer shifts, and potlucks, and want a clean page for the people they invite.

How it works

  1. 1

    Recreate your sign-up

Copy each slot’s title, date, time, and how many people it needs. Most sheets take a few minutes, and starter templates cover common ones.

  2. 2

    Send the new link

Participants don’t need an account on either tool. They’ll see your sheet with no ads.

  3. 3

    Let old sign-ups finish

Keep existing SignUp.com sign-ups running until their dates pass, and start new ones on SlotSheet.

When SignUp.com is the better choice

SignUp.com does more, and that matters for some groups. It’s likely the better fit if you need:

  • Collecting contributions and fees on the sign-up.
  • Text-message reminders, which come with its paid plans.
  • Waivers, participant check-in, and custom participant questions.
  • Hours tracking and reporting, or a Campus plan for a whole school.

When SlotSheet is the better choice

SlotSheet is built to be the simple option:

  • No ads for participants, on the free plan too.
  • A waitlist on every plan, which SignUp.com lists with its paid plans.
  • Organiser plan at $5/month or $39/year, less than SignUp.com’s ad-free add-on alone.
  • Repeating weekly schedules for snacks, ushers, and pantry shifts.

Questions

Is SignUp.com free?

Yes. SignUp.com’s Basic plan is free with unlimited sign-ups and participants. Free sign-ups show ads to participants unless you buy the ad-free upgrade.

Is SignUp.com the same as VolunteerSpot?

Yes. VolunteerSpot renamed itself SignUp.com, so older guides and bookmarks may use either name.

How is SlotSheet different from SignUpGenius and SignUp.com?

All three let people sign up without an account. SlotSheet is the smallest of the three and is ad-free on every plan; the other two have more features and show ads on free sign-ups.

Can I move my SignUp.com sign-ups to SlotSheet automatically?

No, there’s no importer. Recreate the slots by hand or from a starter template, which usually takes a few minutes per sheet.
